About This Item

Faber and Faber, London, 1977. First Edition. Hardcover. Good Condition/Very Good. Illustrator: Illustrated. Acknowledgements, preface by author, list of illustrations, chronological table 1788-1824, Napoleon's marshals in Spain and Portugal (and their titles) bibliography and index. Map of Spain and Portugal on page 10 and 11. The text is illustrated with eight pages of black and white contemporary illustrations between pages 96 and 97. Orange coloured boards with black coloured titles to the back strip. Illustrated dustwrapper (wraparound) with orange and black coloured titles to the front panel and white and yellow coloured titles to the back strip. The war on the Iberian Peninsula in the late 18th and early 19th century was three-pronged: – the French invaders, the invaded – Spain and Portugal and the English who defeated (mostly) the invader. But, though most English accounts see the conflict as a series of battles between the French and the English it was a war of independence for the Spanish and Portuguese which had far reaching repercussions outside of the Peninsula; " ... notably the liberation of South America from foreign domination. Drawing upon contemporary documents and eyewitness accounts, Jan Reid's book sets the conflict in its wider historical context and pay special attention to the activities of the gorillas – who stay-to-day attacks on invader inflicted a terrible toll on the French and it is much to achieve ultimate victory as the more spectacular victories of Wellington." – from the front fold over panel blurb. Softening to the back strip edges with bumping of the book corners. Age toning of the text block edges and pages. There has been a stain to the lower third of the front text edge which has led to the lower right-hand corner of the pages – particularly from page 94 through to 97. Rubbing of the dustwrapper edges and panels with fading to the left hand edge of the front panel and right hand edge of the rear panel. Rubbing to the dustwrapper with a few marks to the verso. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. [5], 6 - 256 pages,. Please refer to accompanying picture (s). Illustrator: Illustrated. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilo.
