About This Item
London: Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown, Green and Longman, 1833. 1st Edition . Hardcover. See Description. Joseph Mallord William Turner. Royal 8vo. 3 volumes of "Turner's annual tour" series (about 24 cm each). "Wanderings by the Loire" (1833) pp. [8], 256, with 21 steel engravings including extra illustrated title page. "Wanderings by the Seine" (1834) pp. [8], 256, with 20 steel engravings including extra illustrated title page. "Wanderings by the Seine from Rouen to the source" (1835) pp. [6], 258, with 20 steel engravings including extra illustrated title page. All engravings are after drawings by Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851), the English Romantic painter, printmaker, and illustrator. Uniformly bound in full dark green leather publisher's bindings by F. Westley - the covers with gilt floral and line borders; the spines with a continuous gilt arabesque design. All edges are gilt. An F. Westerley binder's ticket is present on the inside front cover of the 1835 volume. The bindings show some rubbing and wear to the extremities. Minor restoration/repair is present to the spine tail cap of the 1833 volume. Interior pages and plates are clean. The Tours plate in the 1833 volume contains some extremely faint spots of toning in the illustration. Leitch Ritchie (1800-1865) wrote numerous novels and travel logs in his lifetime. Joseph Turner is known to have worked closely with his engravers including R. Brandard, T. Higham, R. Wallis, W. Miller, W. Radclyffe and others. According to Gordon Ray "Shifting temporarily from vignettes to full-page plates, Turner achieved his best landscapes on steel in this series" [Ray, "The illustrator and the book in England", p. 18; Lowndes, p. 2723].
