"The cultural critic Walter Benjamin carried his notebook everywhere and often sat and wrote in cafes. Perhaps that circumstance contributed to the sensuous freshness and improvisational mobility that characterizes even his most intricate and subtle reasoning. Benjamin enjoyed looking where no one else was looking, exposing symbolic dimensions in contexts where such were considered absent or insignificant. He appreciated old toys and old postcards and other kinds of overlooked things and developed a microscopic eye on reality. It is that range in terms of both perspective and expression that makes him so stimulating to read. Things are constantly happening in his texts, with his texts: each sentence is, so to speak, new. This volume is an ideal introduction to Benjamin's extensive writing. It was originally published in 1969 and reprinted in 1991, but has long been out of print.
