About This Item
Andoversford: Whittington Press, 1989. Bawden, Edward. Folio. (xi), 18pp., (8)ff. From an edition of 120 copies, this is one of forty deluxe copies signed by Bawden and McKitterick. Contains sheets or half-sheets of seven original wallpapers and whole sheets of the "Riviera" and "Facade" papers which are housed in the accompanying portfolio. Also contains full-color reproductions of eight papers for which samples were not available, reproductions of two unpublished designs, and a number of black and white photographs showing rooms decorated with the papers. Between 1927 and 1933 the Curwen Press produced a series of wallpapers that were principally designed by the English artist Edward Bawden, who contributes an introduction to this edition. Printed from lithographic plates that reproduced his lino-cuts, Bawden's designs were printed on sheets of paper rather than in rolls. The Whittington Press acquired the last remaining stock of these papers in private hands and produced this elegant book, which is printed to their usual high standards. Spine very lightly toned, else fine in the special binding of morocco-backed boards covered with wallpaper prints, housed with a cloth-backed portfolio in a cloth and paper slipcase.
