About This Item

New York: Grosset & Dunlap, Inc., [1944] . Original Cloth. Very Good. 5 1/2 x 7 3/4 inches. 273 pages + 1 page epilogue. Ex-library with usual marks. Else pages bright and clean and free of marking, soiling or staining. Bound in publisher's blue cloth which is rubbed and lightly worn at edges. Dated from copyright. Guy Howard was born near Newbern, Iowa. After many years of teaching, he became a missionary worker in the Ozarks. He hitchhiked the entire trip there and settled in Hickory County, Missouri, where he taught rural school for a year. During the next years, he walked over most of southern Missouri and Northern Arkansas preaching and doing odd jobs to pay his way. For ten months, he acted as a social service worker at the Transient Camp near Branson, Missouri. A fascinating look at the post-Depression Ozarks.
