About This Item
London: Neville Spearman, 1958. Hardcover. Small 8vo. Orange paper over boards with gilt spine lettering, pictorial dust jacket. 346pp. Near fine/very good. Faint jacket lightly edgewear, with small chip at head of spine. Tight and handsome second printing of the 1957 English edition of this fiction that became basis for the 1962 same-named drama. On the front flyleaf, shortly before his death the author inscribes and signs enormous and bold in purple marker, which as was his habit he then went over with yellow marker for a two-tone affect: "With best / wishes to / Phil Gerber / from / Nelson Algren / [cat sketch] 1981." Philip L. Gerber (1923-2005) was a noted English professor at the State University of New York at Brockport and author of several academic titles, including studies of Theodore Dreiser and Willa Cather in the popular "Twayne's United States Authors Series." BRUCCOLI A 6.1.e.
