About This Item
New York: Macmillan Company, 1930. First edition. 212pp. Octavo [21 cm] Black cloth with orange and black title and pictorial paper labels on the front board and backstrip. The spine and covers show only mild wear at the edges, and the spine is a bit rolled. The rippled front free endpaper is adhered to the front pastedown, and on the verso of this page, is a previous owner's name and a mounted descriptive blurb about the book. With dark patches on this page, and the page opposite. The frontispiece is lightly offset on the title page. Illustrated with seven full-page woodcuts, including the six-color frontispiece, and fifteen chapter headers by Lynd Ward. Ward created these woodcuts shortly after the publication of his second wordless novel, Mad Man's Drum. These illustrations show Ward at the height of his creative abilities.
