About This Item

London: The Folio Society, 1985. Very Good/Very Good Slipcase. The book is tight and square with solid hinges and bindings, and clean boards. Light fading to lettering on spine. The textblock is clean with no writing, bookplate, or markings, and not BCE, ex-library, or remaindered. Frontispiece plus 11 black and white plates by Christopher Brown. The grey card slipcase is very good with light wear and soiling. 340 pages. 6" X 9 1/4" tall. Selected and introduced by Sue Bradbury.

Somerset Maugham, in addition to being a practitioner of the short story of almost unrivaled success and fame, was a pre-eminent controversialist on the art of the short story. He chose very deliberately to expound and ally himself with certain methods and views by discussing leading exponents of the short story including Edgar Allan Poe, Maupassant, Chekhov, Henry James, Katherine Mansfield, and Rudyard Kipling.

Rain * The Hairless Mexican * Mr. Know-All * The Letter * The Outstation *Winter Cruise * The Luncheon * The Three Fat Women of Antibes * Jane * Louise * The Door of Opportunity * Before the Party * The Ant and the Grasshopper * The Creative Impulse * The Colonel's Lady * The Round Dozen
