About This Item

Berkeley: Howell-North, 1959., 1959. First edition. First edition. 8vo. Presentation inscription by the author. Affixed to the back side of the front fly leaf is a small envelope which contains a facsimile copy from The Syracuse Post-Standard dated Thursday, April 7, 1988, that details some of the history of the O & W from an interview with the author. Gray cloth, titles and decoration stamped in green, colored pictorial endpapers, xiii [1], 211 pp., frontis., preface, illustrated, plates, portraits, maps, tables, two folded maps in a rear pocket, bibliography, acknowledgments. The O. & W. began operation in 1866, beginning in Oswego, New York and ending in Weehawken, New Jersey, outside of New York City. The railway had the unique distinction of running through many small because the money for the railroad came through the sale of railroad bonds to small towns and villages. The line for many years carried passengers to Catskill mountain resorts, but it's main profit came from carrying agricultural and mining products. The line closed in 1957, largely due to the further development of both the automobile and the tractor-trailers. Former owner's small label on front fly leaf, else very good in lightly rubbed dust jacket.
