About This Item

London: Printed at the Logographic Press, 1790. First edition. 4to, viii, xcv,372, [108] pp, 10 maps (3 folding), 18 plates (1 colored and 5 folding). Later full calf. Offsetting from the plates, but a fine, clean copy (285 mm. x 220 mm). Meares visited the Northwest coast in 1786 and 1788. He explored the strait of Juan de Fuca, but missed discovering the Columbia River. His discoveries were part of Great Britain's claim to the Oregon Territory. The seizure of his ships by the Spanish authorities nearly provoked a war between Great Britain and Spain. "This important narrative, compiled from Meares's papers...gives a very full account of the Indian nations of Northwest America"-Hill. Forbes 201; Hill 1126.
