FIRST EDITIONS 1779 AND 1786, (Volumes III and IV not published until 1796), Volume II published in Geneva by Barde and Manget 1786. French text, 4to, approximately 260 x 195 mm, 10 x 7¾ inches, vignette to both title pages, the first drawn by Carl Hachert. Volume I: folding map of Lake Geneva and surrounding mountains, 8 folding plates, VI and VII on the same sheet, engraved headpiece of Geneva to page 1, another of an alpinist to the first page of Part II (355), pages: (4), 540, (1) - Directions to the Binder; Volume II: large folding map of the Alps nearest to Mont Blanc, engraved headpiece of mountains to page 1, 5 folding plates and 1 single plate, a table inserted between pages 576 and 577, and 588 and 589, pages: (4), xvi, (1)-641, (1-2) - including Directions to Binder. Bound in full calf, rebacked, gilt spines, gilt lettered contrasting labels. Corners slightly worn with boards just showing at tips, slight shelf wear to edges, small armorial bookplate of Rowland Burdon on front pastedown, signature in ink of L. R. Wager on front endpaper, occasional small pale mark or spot to margins, otherwise contents clean, tiny closed tear to inner edge of folding map in Volume II, a couple of pages faintly browned, small piece missing from 2 lower corners (paper flaw, no loss of print), tiny closed tear to edge of 1 page of table in Volume II, small closed tear to lower corner of page 512 (Volume II) with old paper repair. A good complete copy of the first 2 volumes in the set of 4, the last 2 being published 10 years after Volume II. The book belonged to L. R. WAGER, A MODERN GEOLOGIST WITH HIS INK SIGNATURE ON THE FIRST FREE ENDPAPER OF EACH VOLUME WITH THE DATE 1946. Lawrence Rickard Wager, commonly known as Bill Wager, (1904 1965) was a British geologist, explorer and mountaineer, described as "one of the finest geological thinkers of his generation" and best remembered for his work on the Skaergaard intrusion in Greenland, and for his attempt on Mount Everest in 1933. Signed and inscribed by Walter Bonatti on the dedication page. With numerous color and b&w photographs by the author (two of which are foldout) and four maps. A terse and impressive first hand account of several of his most notable climbs ranging from the Himalayas to the Andes to the Alps and including the tragic adventure on the Freney Central Pillar. Some insect damage affecting the free endpapers and, barely, the edges of a few of the leaves, previous owner's dedication on the verso of the title page, very mild age-toning to text block. A very good copy in good+ dustjacket with light edge wear and a large tear with tape mends to the upper edge of the front panel. In the Italian language. Uncommon signed.; Octavo; Signed by Author.

Contemporary half-polished calf over boards, spine gilt; an excellent copy with respect to the interior of the book. Unfortunately the board is detached and nearly off. This copy is signed by Henry Oates and presented to him by his Aunt Ann Rayner in Dec. 1797. Ascended from Joseph Henry Oates to Lawrence (Titus) Oates who accompanied Scott on his expedition to the South Pole.

It is dated 20 October 1954, with the stamps being cancelled on the same date. Signed by 11 of the 14 Italian members of the climbing team. FIRST PRINTING OF THE TITLE IN THE FORMAT UNIFORM WITH OTHER WORKS OF THE AUTHOR. The textblock of the Uniform Edition is somewhat larger then the original and uses a larger, bolder typeface.
