(9.9 x 6.7 inches). 8 leaves of text which each have a three section pop up scene, printed in colours, mounted above the letterpress. The three sections are joined together by a purple silk ribbon, attached with brass rivets, and give a peep-show effect when lifted. Publishers purple endpapers with multiple adverts. Full colour printed front board on pink paper. Rear board on blue paper with publishers adverts lettered in black. Dark green cloth spine. Small printed paper label of a Parisian Bookseller on the front free endpaper. A remarkable survivor. There are two small closed tears that have been expertly repaired to the rear but there is no loss and the pop-ups are in wonderful condition. There is a little rubbing to the edges of the boards and spine but overall this is a superior copy of an uncommon and fragile book. Issued as no. 2 in Deans new scenic book series, this is one of just four titles published. --- Dean's were at this address from 1865 to 1872. (Brown. London publishers and printers, c. 1800-1870).

In a letter to a collector written in 1951 Davies reported having no spare copies of this book and that his best guess was that no more than 600 were in existence.

Each spine with five raised bands, decorated with gilt piping. Compartments multi ruled and lettered in gilt and with blind tooled centre decorations. Marbled paper on boards. Gold on grey marbled endpapers. Top edges gilt, the others untrimmed and a few gatherings still unopened. Illustrated with decorative head and tail pieces, vignettes in the text and multiple full page black and white illustrations by F. S. Coburn throughout. Each frontis plate protected with a printed descriptive tissue guards. Title pages printed in red and black. Pages nice and clean throughout. There is some minor bumping and rubbing to the corners of the bindings and a couple of small scratches to the lower board of volume 9 but overall this is a near fine, handsome set in excellent condition that looks wonderful on the shelf.
