Good/No Dust Jacket. 1st English Edition; English Version translated by Philip Walsh. viii, 315 pages, folding photographic frontispiece plus 47 photographs, 3 sketches and 1 map. Original blue-grey cloth covers, gilt illustration of ship and titling to front cover, penguin and gilt titling to spine. Spine faded and worn and splitting, covers slightly bowed. Hinges cracked but text block still tight. Some foxing throughout, more so to end papers. Contents clean. 1st Edition; ix, 364 pages, 2 maps, one coloured and one folding, numerous black and white illustrations throughout the text including vignette on title page, publisher's catalogue to rear. Original coarse-grain green cloth with silver titling and illustration of whaling in the ice. Contemporary owners signature dated 1859 on front end paper. The colour maps is of Graham Land, Soth Shetland and South Orkneys; the folding map shows the route of the entire journey. Covers stained, possibly due to storage in an inappropriate dust cover at some point. Contents clean. "This was an important whaling expedition to the Weddell Sea, the first of its kind since 1843.
