First Printing indicated by a complete alphabetical sequence. Very Good+ in Very Near Fine DJ: The Book shows some roughage along the top edge of the panels; the binding leans ever so slightly, while remaining perfectly secure; the text is clean. Free of creased or dog-eared pages in the text.. Free of any underlining, hi-lighting or marginalia or marks in the text. Free of any ownership names, dates, addresses, notations, inscriptions, stamps, plates, or labels. A handsome, copy, structurally sound and tightly bound, showing one serious imperfection and another minor, unobtrusive flaw. Bright and clean. Corners sharp. The DJ is flawless; the price is intact; mylar-protected. Virtually 'As New'. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. Squarish 4to. (10.3 x 9.3 x 0.45 inches). unpaginated. Illustrated by Alice and Martin Provensen. Language: English. Weight: 16.3 ounces. Hardback with DJ. I was very impressed by the first effort from this team, "A Visit to William Blake's Inn: Poems for Innocent and Experienced Travelers"; published in 1981. Obviously, I was not alone. 'A Visit' is only book to have won both the Newberry and Caldecott awards for best children's writing and illustration. "Ludgate Hill" employs clever rhymes, nimble animals, and will appeal to toddlers and those in early grades. It contains the poetry of Robert Luis Stevenson and the story of a trip on an ocean liner he took from England to New York. Stevenson said he was so happy during the voyage, which was generally a terrible trip, that he made up a fantasy poem to pass the time. The poem contains animals, people, and problems with food. Very cute.
Synopsis
“Both children and adults will be delighted with the humor that these illustrations display. . . . [This book] blends fact and imagination, provides a wonderful way to introduce speculation, one of the higher-order thinking skills. . . . Don’t pass this book up. It’s a sure winner!”-School Library Journal
