About This Item
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1905. xix, 556;xix, 508pp. Octavo. Two volumes. Publisher's dark blue ribbed cloth with gold gilt replica of RGS medal embossed to the front board of volume 1 volumes, with a different design on the second volume, and gold gilt lettering stamped to both spines. Gold gilt to top edge of both textblocks. Illustrated with 260 black and white illustrations, some full page, originally done by Edward Wilson and other members of the expedition, a photogravure frontispiece in both volumes, twelve coloured plates, three maps--one folding in a pocket at the rear pastedown-- in the first volume and two maps in the second volume, one folding and in a pocket at the rear pastedown. The stamp of the Maritime Museum of British Columbia to the front and rear pastedown of both volumes. The signature, and identifying information, of the author and explorer, Gareth Wood, to the title page of both volumes in blue ink. Minor spot of soiling to the fore edge of the text block of the second volume. The back hinge of the first volume is beginning to crack and the front hinge has been professionally repaired in the second volume, which is not uncommon given the size of both volumes. An attractive set in very good condition. Spence 1050. Scott's first Antarctic expedition in the ship "Discovery", originally conceived, promoted and launched by Sir Clements Markham, who also chose Scott as its leader. This was the first expedition to do extensive land exploration on the continent and the furthest south by a sledge party that reached 82 16' S. This set was once owned by Gareth Wood, who was a part of the "In the Footsteps of Scott" expedition of 1984-87 and also authored work on the South Pole. 1905
