1801 Vancouver Voyage to North Pacific Canada Alaska Illustrated Navigation

Rare first edition on the most important voyage of the North Pacific!

In 1791, Royal Navy officer George Vancouver set out on an expedition to North America's Pacific Northwest, exploring western Canada, Alaska, and parts of Northwest United States. The specifics of this voyage were published in 1801 by Stockdale, in an impressive six-volume set, which is often considered to be the most accurate account of the Pacific Northwest.

According to Howes, of all modern expeditions to the Pacific, Vancouver's is one of the most important. In this work Vancouver also describes Alaskan and Canadian natives, nautical and astronomical wonders, and encounters with Spanish missions.

Per Hill,

"This voyage became one of the most important ever made in the interests of geographical knowledge."

This example includes all six volumes, printed in three tomes.

Description:
1822 Famous 2ed David Porter Journal USS Essex Battle of Valparaiso War of 1812

David Porter was an early American naval captain who served on the USS Constitution and the USS Essex. While aboard the Essex, Porter faced significant hardships, including the Battle of Valparaiso where the ship was ultimately disabled. Porter kept a journal of his time aboard the Essex, a journal that was quickly published after capture of the Essex.
According to Hill, the second of Porter's 'Journal' is the "best edition" and is more complete even than the first. In fact, this edition contains the first instance of the details of Porter's loss of the USS Essex in 1814. This edition also includes an expanded preface as well as folding maps and notes and illustrations on the Galapagos Islands.

A rare printing of Vignola's 'Five Orders of Architecture' Giacomo da Vignola was perhaps the most important 16th-century architects. Originally printed in 1562, 'Regola,' as it is often called, was successful mainly due to its effectiveness in teaching. It was designed to aid builders and designers in the realization of their architectural projects. It focuses on all five of the major orders (or styles) of architecture – Doric, Ionic, Corinthian, Tuscan, and Roman. (Fabrizio)
This 18th-century French edition includes 84 impressive architectural engravings and features a short treatise on stone cutting and carpentry, as well as lessons on the work of Vignola by Claude Delagardette.

Description:
1537 1ed Orthodox Saint John Chrysostom On the Priesthood + Brixius Marburg

A rare 16th-century printing of works of John Chrysostom. Chrysostom was one of the most important Early Christian Church authors and preachers and is most remembered for his sermons and homilies. He preached on many different subjects, but his most frequented topic was helping the needy. Chrysostom calls for followers of Jesus to set aside their material desires to help the poor, often in a way that shamed the rich and guilted them in to giving.
"Do you pay such honor to your excrements as to receive them into a silver chamber-pot when another man made in the image of God is perishing in the cold?" (Chrysostom in Liebeschuetz)

One of his most important treatises was 'On the Priesthood' in which he describes his experiences becoming a priest and living as a priest. Interestingly, this work was popular during his lifetime as he made references to it in his other works.
This extremely rare 16th-century edition of 'On the… Read More

1942 SUPERMAN 1ed Superhero Graphic Novel DC Comic Lowther Color Illustrated
"When Superman came out, it galvanized the entire industry. It's just part of the American scene. Superman is going to live forever."
― Jack Kirby, Comics Journal
Superman is one of the most popular fictional superheroes of all time, published by DC Comics. Superman appeared in various radio shows, newspaper comics, and eventually television and movie premiers. Because of his popularity, the name Superman has become synonymous with the American comic book. The book is the first novelization of a comic book character, and the first Superman story written by someone other than Jerry Siegel. It was Lowther who first provided many now-familiar details of Superman's birth and early life.
This 1942 first book edition by Random House features nine full-page illustrations with all 4 color illustrations.

1887 FOLIO Rime of Ancient Mariner Coleridge Gustave Dore & Paton Illustrated

Known as one of the English Lake Poets, Samuel Taylor Coleridge was one of the most notable 19th-century English romance poets. Coleridge's longest poem was 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner'. This poem was one of the most important poems written at the end of the 18th-century, as it was known to begin the shift from the Romantic period into the Modern period of English poetry. It describes the sea voyages of a sailor who experienced dangers, adventures, and even supernatural encounters!

This huge 1887 edition is notable for including the illustrations of Gustave Dore and Joseph Noel Paton. In addition to the highly desirable art, this edition features commentary and critical notes by Alfred Trumble.

"There is nothing in the world so irresistibly contagious as laughter and good humor."
― Charles Dickens
'David Copperfield' is often regarded as Charles Dickens' best and most popular novel – even to English author Virginia Woolf who calls it 'the most perfect of all the Dickens novels.' According to Eckel,
"With many lovers of the author's works David Copperfield ranks as the finest of his writings. With a book which gave to the world such characters as Betsy Trotwood, Micawber, the Pegottys and Mr. Dick. it would be strange if it had been otherwise."

Description:
1748 ENGLISH Vauban FORTS Military Engineering Fortifications Illustrated War

Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban was a 17th-century French engineer who, after serving as the Marshal of France, became known as the greatest engineer of his time. It was from his surveys and developments in fortifications that propelled him to engineering fame. In fact, his fortification philosophies were used for nearly a century after his life. Vauban understood that at some point, all forts would fall, no matter how powerful. From this, Vauban sought to improve fort designs to absorb as much of the attack force as possible, even including house and structures to support fortification walls.

This 1748 English edition of Vauban's famous "Method of Fortification" contains each of the highly desirable 32 engravings – views of forts, walls, and common attack strategies.
