London: T Cadell and W Davies, 1806 A good copy of the 1st edition in contemporary full leather binding with 21 aquatint plates, including a fold out view of Rio de Janeiro and 2 fold out maps. John Barrow (1764-1848) accompanied Lord Macartney's embassy to China as comptroller of the household. He learnt the Chinese language. He later accompanied Lord Macartney as his private secretary on a mission to the Cape of Good Hope. This volume mainly covers his experience in China, but an annex gives an account of his journey in 1801 and 1802 to South Africa. This copy is in a full leather binding which has been rebacked at some point to provide a newer spine with title and author labels and a date in gilt at the bottom. The binding is in very good clean condition with some wear to corners and light scuffing. Contents: title page; dedication; preface; contents (i-xviii); directions for placing the plates 1p; text and index pp 1-447. There are 18 single page aquatint plates and 3 fold-out plates of which 2 are maps. Overall the text and plates are clean with light toning and the occasional spot. There is some marking in the top margin of pp169-176. The first fold out has repair at the fold. One map has repair at the fold. Both maps have offsetting which affects the maps themselves and surrounding text pages. It is for this reason that the book has been classed as 'good' rather than 'very good'.
