1829 Cessolis Book of CHESS Italian Nobility Ludo Scachorum Games Social Classes

Jacobus de Cessolis was a 13th-century Italian author who published a book that was nearly as popular as the Bible – a book on the customs of noble Italian men or, 'The Book of Chess'. This book was a curious pairing of chess instruction and strategy with instruction on duties of noblemen. This book was not only the best work on chess from the 13th-century, it would become the basis for William Caxton's 15th-century chess manual.

Known originally as "De ludo scachorum", this book explains the origins of chess and how it was intended to correct the evil behaviors of kings and rulers. It also discusses the different pieces and the parallels to their ranks in society. It concludes with actual gameplay instruction and rules.

This 1829 Italian edition includes the 14 original illustrations, in the style of 15th-century master illustrators.

Junius was the pseudonym of a writer who contributed a series of letters to the Public Advertiser, a London newspaper, from 1769 to 1772. The 'Letters of Junius' composed of 68 letters between the 'Public Advertiser,' Philo Junius, Sir William Draper, and Mr. Horne. Rare original poetry book with cloth covered boards, copyright 1880 by J. W. Shoemaker & Co. This edition published in 1906 by the Penn Publishing company, Philadelphia. From the estate of my great-great grandfather.Includes many unique poems and recitations such as "To a skull", "Uncle Daniel's Introduction to a Mississippi Steamer", "The Leak in the Dyke", etc. More well-known poetry includes "Song of Birds", "Old Ironsides", and "Bannock Burn" by Robbie Burns. Light rubbing and bumps to outside spine edges. Back cover and interior cloth covered board has a stain at top. Original owner's name and address from 1908, but no other writing or marks. First 2 pages have a stain at top, but text of 192 pages of poetry and recitations is totally clean with light tanning of pages.
