Pages are quite foxed and very age-toned, with some staining, and an occasional underlining of text in red pen. Text block is dirty and age-toned. Tissue between book plate and title page is very foxed, with creased corners. Some pages are creased, folded at corner tips, with an occasional tear. Writing on FFE in red pen. Book has been covered with an old school brown paper bag book cover, and it will remain in place to prevent any possible damage to paste downs and end pages. Hardcover. 8vo - 23.5 x 14.5 cm.; 268 - (2) pp. Wine red cloth over boards with gilt lettering on the spine and blind stamped border rules (3) on the front board. "A Bible text book for missionary training and Bible study schools; advance classes in churches, endeavor and Christian associations and higher educational institutions, lay and missionary workers in home and foreign fields, all Bible teachers, students, and thoughtful readers". Three page introductory section followed by the main text and concluding with a 2 page alphabetical index of topics. Two pages of publisher's adverts at the back. Two previous owner's names on the front free end paper one of which is blacked out. Occasional (very occasional) undelining in the text, otherwise clean with a sound and solid binding. The externals show moderate wear with bumped and worn corners, part of the tail edges and the spine tips. The spine is a tad faded with two whitish blemishes at the top. A clear and removable archival cover has been fitted. .

For a brief time he served in a pastorate in Williamsburg, and then for sixteen years was pastor of the Walnut Street Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia. Dr. Butler was the author of "The Bible Work," a series of eleven volumes, which took him twenty years to compile. His other works include "Topical Analysis of the Bible," "Vital Truths Respecting God and Man," and "The Fourfold Gospel." He died in 1916.
