About This Item

London: Bradbury and Evans, 1857-1859. First Edition. First issue, with "actresses" instead of "ancestresses" on p.207, line 15 (No.7, Vol.1). 24 octavo parts n original printed wrappers; illus. Housed in a quarter leather clamshell case with chemise. Skillful restoration to lower 1.5cm of front wrapper on No.1. Wrappers lightly and uniformly soiled, lightly worn overall, though complete. Text edges lightly toned with some scattered soil throughout; brief contemporary owners name written on upper margin on five parts; a solid, Very Good set overall. Presence of ads for this set conform to Van Duzer with exception to the following: Part VI lacking rear ad leaf; Part XIV lacks slip and illstration page at rear; Part XV lacking slip; pp.1-2 are numbered in Part XVI; Part XX lacking "The Daily News" ad; Grace Aguilar ads lacking in Part XXIV, as always. Presence of tissue is lacking in 13 of 24 parts (though its presence or absence is not a point of issue). A handsome set. VAN DUZER 232.

Reviews

On Aug 12 2016, a reader said:
This book is a sequel to Henry Esmond and I would recommend reading that book before reading The Virginians.I especially liked Thackeray's perspective of comparing his present time(1859)with the mores of 1756.This enabled me to compare1959 with 1859 and 1756.For me ,it was an extremely enjoyable read, one that I feel actually helped make me a little smarter.
