About This Item

An albumen paper cabinet photograph (136 × 95 mm), on the original gilt-edged printed mount of Stewart and Co., 217 and 219 Bourke St East, Melbourne. Undated, but probably 1890s. Photograph lightly tanned (possibly from the acidic mount); slight erasure to the mount near the address numbers; in excellent condition. This is a photograph of a calligraphic testimonial that contained 31 portrait photographs (30 uniform-sized ones of members of the band, and a larger one of the recipient of the testimonial). It was presented to George Christian Clauscen 'as a mark of esteem'. Apparently he was 'mayor of Fitzroy 1886-87 and originator of the Northcote cable tram' (OnlyMelbourne website), but his connection with the Northcote Brass Band is not immediately obvious.
