About This Item
Philadelphia: J. Dobson, 1839. First edition, 8vo, pp. 56; removed from binding, wrappers perished; old historical society rubberstamp at the base of the title page, deaccessioned. Packard graduated from Harvard in 1814 and edited the Hampden Federalist in Springfield for ten years, and was a member of the state legislature in 1828-9. In 1829 he moved to Philadelphia, and from then until his death he edited the publications of the American Sunday-School Union, some 2,000 of them in all, more than forty of which he wrote or compiled himself. In July, 1849, he was elected president of Girard College, but declined. He also edited the Sunday-School Magazine, the Sunday-School Journal, and the Youth's Penny Gazette, afterward known as the Child's World, "projected the first child's paper in the United States" (CAB). He also edited the Journal of Prison Discipline. A humble and unassuming man, he often wrote anonymously, as here. American Imprints 57755; Sabin 58114.
