Oxford: Printed by H. Hall for R. Davis, 1653. First Edition . Hardcover. Good. 12mo. FIRST EDITION. OXFORD : 1653. Hardback. 19th century textured cloth spine and corners; marbled boards. Gilt lettered label to spine. Tight, bright and clean. Neat owner names to title-page; Inscription to blank page after index; saying this book belonged to William John Methodist local preacher from Polpero, Cornwall; he died February 12 1823.. No internal markings. Feint old stains and marginal insect holes (some affecting a few words to pages towards the rear of the book). Looks to have been bound after the owner's death in honour of him; This book new bound 1846. Minor wear. Overall a good sound copy. Complete; no pages missing (apart from the first blank). With noted faulty pagination. GOOD (xxii), 591, 602-641, (i) pages. Index. Referenced by: Wing (2nd edition, 1994) B3442. : Madan, II, 2228. : Thomason E.1271[1]. SCARCEST of Bogan's writings. ZACHARY BOGAN (1625-1659) was an English scholar with Biblical interests. He published with the antiquarian Francis Rous the younger, and the alchemist Edmund Dickinson. He argued for parallels between Biblical and ancient Greek literature. He also wrote purely religious works, before dying young from consumption. He was born in Gatcomb, Devon, and was a fellow of Corpus Christi College, Oxford. Bogan published Treatises on the Idioms of Homer and Hesiod, as compared with the Language of Scripture, and some devotional tracts. He collaborated with Francis Rous the younger on the work Archaeologiae Atticae Libri Septem (Seven books of the Attick Antiquities) in 1649. He also co-authored some works with Thomas Godwyn and Francis Rous. 12mo. **Will be well-packed for posting/shipping**.
