About This Item
NY: William Sloane Associates, 1960. First Trade Edition. Nice signed presentation from White on the front endpaper: "For Joe Panuch,- who knows more about how it looks from on top than anyone else I know, Teddy White.--- Theodore H. White. 4/22/60." J. Anthony Panuch, lawyer and expert on business and government reorganization, spent considerable time in government, both Federal and New York City, beginning in 1938 when he was persuaded by William O. Douglas, the Associate Justice of the Supreme Court who was then chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission, to head the S.E.C.'s New York regional activities. Early in World War II, Panuch was chairman of the policy committee of the Board of Economic Warfare. In 1943 he became special adviser to Gen. Lucius D. Clay, then director of materiel, Headquarters, Army Service Force and subsequently deputy director of the Office of War Mobilization and Reconversion. In the late fifties Panuch was special adviser to Mayor Robert F. Wagner on housing and urban renewal and authored a 112‐page report on housing entitled "Building a Better New York." The document, issued early in 1960, cited as the city's single greatest immediate and future need, an increase in the supply of middle‐income housing. Panuch's last public service assignment was as vice president and director of the New York World's Fair of 1964-65. A personalized sheet of Panuch's World's Fair stationery is laid in as are many clipped newspaper articles about this book. Panuch has made a few pencils notations in the text. There is also a signed, limited edition of this title, which is fairly common. Small 8vo., decorative dark-gray cloth in dust jacket; 468 pages. Very Good (covers nice; contents clean & tight with little browning front endpapers) minor wear (small nick head of spine) d/j.
