Garden City: Doubleday, Page & Company, 1922. Initial criticism was negative for this novel, focusing on its modernistic style of four different perspectives, but now it is recognized as one of Conrad's best. It has been adapted for film several times. First published in 1915; this is a Fine copy of of a Later Printing, from seven years after. Dark blue cloth binding with gilt titling and decorations on spine and front cover. Prone to visible rubbing and wear due to the nature of the dark cloth, this copy has none save hints along the edges. Clean text; 462 pages; maps as endpapers. The dusjacket is unclipped. The spine has darkened and has a tiny bit of wear; a light spot in the middle of the spine has not darkened. Although not the First Edition, this is a superior copy. In an archival plastic protector.. Later Printing. Hard Cover. Fine/Very Good Plus. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
Synopsis
Axel Heyst, a dreamer and a restless drifter, believes he can avoid suffering by cutting himself off from others. Then he becomes involved in the operation of a coal company on a remote island in the Malay Archipelago, and when it fails he turns his back on humanity once more. But his life alters when he rescues a young English girl, Lena, from Zangiacomo's Ladies' Orchestra and the evil innkeeper Schomberg, taking her to his island retreat. The affair between Heyst and Lena begins with her release, but the relationship shifts as Lena struggles to save Heyst from detachment and isolation. Featuring arguably the most interesting hero created by Conrad, "Victory" is both a compelling tale of adventure and a perceptive study of the power of love.
