About This Item
Twenty [21] original late-Victorian era humorous cards, circa 1880-1890; a few have advertising material. Victorian humor is not funny - 6 cards mock fat men, more ridicule drunks, unattractive people, and foreigners; some with anti-Irish jabs, practical jokes, and many laughs at others' expense.
A few of the cards advertise businesses selling furniture, soap, clothing, and stationery, located in Providence RI, Pen Yan NY, Glastonbury CT, New Bedford CT, and Portland ME.
A few are full-color chromos, some monochromatic lithographs, and 7 monochromatic woodcuts. Condition generally good, used. all with light yellowing from age-toning; some with light creases, glue residue, or surface / edge wear; one with pencil marks. A few details: "On With the Dance, let joy be unconfined." Original antique lithographed Victorian stock trade card with a man and woman dancing, a flute player in the background. Measures 2-1/2 by 4-1/8 inches. Reverse side is blank. Quote is originally from Lord Byron, further immortalized by Mark Twain. "Sad Predicament on a Man who wants to go Home." Original antique lithographed Victorian stock trade card with a man caught swimming, unable to get back to his clothes on the shore because women have arrived, one of whom is fishing in the background. Measures 2-1/2 by 4-1/8 inches. Reverse side is blank. "T´is Years Since last we met." Original antique lithographed Victorian stock trade card with a fat man unable to button his vest. Measures 2-1/2 by 4-1/8 inches. Reverse side is blank. "I Know Where I eat lobsters. I know where I drank that Tom and Jerry, but blamed if I know where I eat that dog." Original antique lithographed Victorian stock trade card with a drunk man holding on to a lamp post and throwing up, a dog at his feet inspecting the mess. Measures 2-1/2 by 4-1/8 inches. Reverse side is blank. "Struck." Original antique lithographed Victorian stock trade card with a man following a woman he is attracted to. Measures 2-1/2 by 4-1/8 inches. Reverse side is blank. "We've had a D'l of a time," Victorian Lithographed Card. Antique Lithographed Victorian Advertising Trade Card. "Shoulder Arms." Copyright 1882, Sammis & Latham. A soldier and girl courting, her father catching them. Reverse is blank. Measures 2-3/4 by 4-1/2 inches.
