About This Item

Williamsburg and Chapel Hill: Institute of Early American History and Culture, 1960. First Edition. Near fine in dark blue, smooth cloth covered boards with gilt text on the spine. A small quarto of 9 by 6 inches with only a touch of rubbing to the cloth at the head and heel of the spine and with a prior owner's, signed book plate on the front free end page. Without a dust jacket. 242 pages including an index and a bibliography. The history of Admiralty Courts goes back as far as the 1400's. It was a separate branch of the courts system in many European countries. They were used to adjudicate disputes over shipping, ships and collisions and their most illustrious work were the settlement of claims against ships and cargos taken during a time of war.
