Burlington, VT: Free Press Association, 1869. First edition. Hardcover. Good. tips worn, corners bumped. The Vermont Brigade, a part of the Sixth Corps served under the command of Major General Phillip H. Sheridan, commander of the Army of the Shenandoah. The author was a battalion commander in the Eleventh Vermont, a regiment of the hard fighting Brigade. At just one engagement, the Battle of the Wilderness, Vermont experienced its worst day of the war; 1,000 men were killed or wounded from the 1st Vermont Brigade alone. One in eight of the casualties resulting in the battle was by this brigade, which was one of 32 brigades on the Union side. Original brown cloth with gilt Greek cross, the brigade insignia on front cover and very legible gilt spine lettering. Original moss-green coated endpapers. 3 maps, including the frontispiece.
