About This Item
Little, Brown; Boston; 1951. First edition, published May 1951. (Although there are no markings, still I suspect that this is a book club edition. In any case, this is a nice hardcover reading copy, clean and tight, for the price of a paperback.) Tan cloth-covered boards, 8 1/8 x 5 5/8 inches, 317 pp. VG (mildly warped boards). No dustcover. From the Foreword: "But for the Shimabara Rebellion of 1637, the setting of this book, Japan might have assimilated and contributed to the great discoveries of the Western World that followed the Dark Ages. There might have been a Japanese Columbus or Magellan. A Harvey, A Galileo, might have appeared in Kyoto or a Descartes on Mt. Koya. And world history could have been very different." (3214045). F. Hardcover.
