Numerous b&w photos Venezuela Bay View Reading Club Detroit February 1913 Vol. 20, #6 9 3/4 x 6 3/4", pp. 309-364, The Bay View Reading Club (estab. 1893) promoted home study by designing reading courses that concentrated on a particular, geographic area. They would publish a study book for the area along with an illustrated monthly magazine [similar to the Nat. Geographic]. In 1912-13, a course on South America was being developed. The magazine issue for March 1913 includes two articles on Venezuela by W. E. Brown, one on Caracas and the other a short history of the United States of Venezuela. George Musgrave writes about Cuba at the time Gen. Menocal was about to become president. Marie Robinson Wright writes about art in South America, and Elizabeth Fitzhugh takes a trip through Central America. The text and photographs were different. They gave a view of contemporary life at the turn of the century that most Americans had never seen. The magazine seldom survived. An unusual piece of ephemera.
