[From front jacket flap] There are sharply divided views on the correctness of the Vatican's action in removing Father Charles Curran's license to teach moral theology at the Catholic University of America. For some commentators. the major concern is the narrow but important issue of the locus and extent of authority in the Church. For others, the primary issue is the nature and function of the theologian in the Church. For still others, it is the probable impact within and outside the Church of a number of moral issues, including abortion. sterilization, homosexuality, and divorce One further concern is that of the impact on American higher education: Will academic freedom as now defined in Roman Catholic institutions be maintained or limited? This concern is heightened by the proposed schema that would increase church control over all Catholic institutions of higher education. These are some of the issues raised by the Curran case and explored in the chapters of this book. The contributions by leading Roman Catholic and, in two cases. Protestant scholars build on presentations by Archbishop Roger M. Mahony of Los Angeles and Father Curran himself. The contributors, expressing a variety of viewpoints, address themselves to all aspects of this complex issue, which has major consequences not only for Roman Catholics and their institutions but, given the forceful moral leadership assumed by the Church in the United States, for American society as a whole. Contents include: Introduction by William W. May; The Magistcrium and Theological Dissent by Archbishop Roger M. Mahony; Authority and Dissent in the Roman Catholic Church by Charles E.
