About This Item

New York: The Baker & Taylor Company, 1910. Hardcover. Small 8vo. Olive green cloth with orange and black lettering and orange/black pictorial stamping. 396pp. Tissue-guarded frontispiece, 5 full-page called-for plates. Very good. Mildest of binding edgewear only, with rear board slightly scuffed; else internally tight and near fine. Handsome, tight first edition. Johnson (1878-1952) is best remembered for his "Lawrenceville stories" set in the famous New Jersey prep school, and of those tales "The Varmint" introduced its most enduring character, Dink Stover. In 1950 a film version based on "The Varmint" was made titled "The Happy Years," and this bright copy bears fine autograph additions from its two main stars. Tipped to the front flyleaf are two matching heavy stock 4½" X 3" cards, each signed boldly. At top DEAN STOCKWELL (1936-2021, who plays Dink Stover) signs boldly in black ballpoint; beneath this DARRYL HICKMAN (born 1931, who plays "Tough" McCarty) signs in red fineline, dating it 28 November 1986 at upper right. Laid in are the ideal bookmarks: Stockwell and Hickman's original transmittal envelopes.
