Smith, Elder & Co, 1878. First Thus. Leather Binding. Very Good. 4 volumes, 'Vanity Fair' complete. Beautifully bound by Zaehnsdorf in a lustrous full brown polished calf, spines with raised band, three red morocco labels, elaborate gilt floral tooling within gilt-ruled compartments, and four small red morocco inlays tooled in gilt, covers bordered with three fillets in gilt, with four red morocco inlays at corners tooled in gilt, inner dentelles tooled with four gilt fillets and a repeating pattern in blind, all edges extra gilt (light rubbing to spines; rear cover of Volume I detached but present). Plates in chine colle by Thackeray. Copy #229 of 1000. The set from which this work comes, originaly issued in 24 volumes, was extended to 52 by Zaehnsdorf. PROVENANCE: Engraved bookplate of William P. Hoffman.
