London: Heinemann, 1964. First edition, first printing. Published by Heinemann in London in 1964. This is a near fine copy. The dust wrapper, designed by Broom-Lynne, has some wear at the spine tips. The spine is mostly bright, though slightly faded. The boards, bound in the red cloth, are sharp at the corners. The text blocks are mostly bright, but with some mild foxing throughout. This copy is free from previous owners ink and is, overall, in near fine condition. Separated into four chapters. The concluding sections of the previous novel, The Kindly Ones, show series protagonist Nick Jenkins trying to join the army. At the beginning of this novel, it is early in 1940 and the reader sees that he has succeeded.
Synopsis
The Valley of Bones is the seventh novel in the sequence of twelve comprising Anthony Powell's masterpiece, A Dance to the Music of Time. Published in 1964, it is the first of the war trilogy, poignantly capturing the atmosphere of the time whilst offering a subversively comic view of Army life. The conflict between regular soldiers and the bank managers-cum-officers is caught in some of the funniest scenes in the sequence.
