Bickerton in Pater-noster Row." 22.5 cm x 14.5 cm, pp. 56; 48, woodcuts throughout. Blind-framed dark brown cloth, gilt spine lettering. Heraldic bookplate of James Comerford with the motto So Ho Ho Dea Ne to front pastedown, and the armorial bookplate of William James Mercer to front pastedown with the motto Crux Christi Nostra Corona. Covers slightly soiled, spine sunned, spine ends rubbed, otherwise a very good, very clean copy of a most interesting little book of verse with a nice provenance. The tracts were originally published in 1720. Curious and amusing wood-cuts of all the signs of public-houses celebrated in the work accompany it, a page being devoted to each (97), with descriptive, satirical, and humorous verses under every sign, together with explanatory and other notes. And, after giving an account of the house, the landlord, and the frequenters of it, sets out to give advice, hints, and "nasty knocks" to the "Props" (customers). ESTC T120380; T120379.
