About This Item
Privately Printed Munich 1959, 1959 UNIQUE COPY of this rare book, the first publication of Alison Lurie. A rare unification of three great talents, Edward Gorey, John Fowles, and Alison Lurie. It is in its original (rather delicate and discoloured) glassine cover, with a letter from the author to John Fowles, her dedication to John Fowles on the book's half title, and a card with the signed autograph of Edward Gorey, who did the cover illustration. One of only 300 copies, signed and inscribed by author: 'For John Fowles, with admiration, Alison Lurie' on the half title page. The letter to Fowles is loosely enclosed, and is signed 'Alison Bishop'. Alison Lurie was married at the time to Jonathan Peale Bishop. The Edward Gorey signature is on a small sheet of card, and is also loose laid. Wonderful associative copy of what is a very rare publication. V. R. Lang was the founder of the 'Poets Theater' in Cambridge, MA. Alison Lurie was an early member, along with poet James Merrill and Edward Gorey. This is Pulitzer Prize winner Lurie's first book. Internally clean, sound text block. Glassine DJ has some age related toning and chipping along edges, which is usual with all copies, and I have retained it because it is as issued. At least the glassine has done its job, because the stiff card wrap is near fine. Language: eng Language: eng. Signed by Author. Limited Edition.. Soft cover. Near Fine.
