About This Item

Chicago / Minneapolis / New York: Gordon Volland Publications / The Buzza Company, 1927. First printing. Near fine in very good plus box.. First edition of this detailed kid's narrative of the history of each animal in the visiting circus. Kay's illustrations invoke a more muted palette than typical Volland productions (Gordon Volland, who headed the children's department of Buzza, was the son of P.F. Volland) - yet they nicely dovetail two major aesthetic trends in US children's books of this period: the jazzy Art Deco of Volland and its imitators, and the warmer subtleties of the Brandywine school. A beautiful copy of a scarce title. 8.75'' x 6.75'' (box); 8.25'' x 6.25'' (book). Original pictorial cloth backed pictorial paper boards. Pictorial endpapers. Illustrated in color throughout. In original color pictorial box. 120 pages. Book with a bit of bumping to extremities. Box with minor soil and rubbing, short closed tear to right flap. Interior fresh and bright.
