Lippincott, 1861. Cloth. Fair/No Jacket. Green cloth with gilt to spine. Only library markings are library stamp to fep with discard written in red ink over stamp and sticker residue on back cover. Booksellers stamp on ffep but otherwise text block is in good shape, unmarked except for foxing and toning. Many fold out illustrations, the first is torn and others creased but otherwise appear quite legible. Corners bumped and cloth shows some spots, worn at spine hinge and spine eges with front hinge beginning to give. Text block is tight and square.

Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott & Co, 1861. Decorative Cloth. Very Good +. An exceptionally bright copy of the 1861 1st edition. Tight and VG+ in its bevelled dark-green cloth, with crisp, completely unflecked gilt-titling and insignia along the spine. Light foxing at the pastedowns and endsheets, faint staining to the front inner hinge (and continuing very lightly thru the preliminaries). 15 fold-out plates (all intact and very clean, except the frontispiece plate, the left half of which has been neatly excised) and 77 additional plates thruout the text. Thick 64mo, 450 pgs. plus Lippincott's list of recent publications ("McClellan's Bayonet Exercises", etc.) at the rear. This copy bears the ownership blindstamp of William Buell Sprague (1795-1876) of Albany, NY, noted Congregational and Presbyterian clergyman and compiler of the 9 volume set "Annals of the American Pulpit"

Hardcover / publisher's original blue pebbled cloth with gilt lettering and stamp on spine. Blind triple ruling and stamp on both boards. Very good condition with only minor signs of external wear. Corners slightly bumped. Very minor abrasion to cloth at bottom front corner. Very minor closed tear to page 25. Minor foxing occasionally throughout. Signs of dampstaining evident throughout otherwise clean and bright volume. Binding good and firm and tight bookblock. Inked annotation to title page. Ownership annotation to front pastedown. Embossed stamp of Wm B Sprague Jr, 51 State St, Albany on front endpaper. Endpaper also carries pencilled signature of George C Strong dated April 28 1862.
