About This Item
San Blas Islands, Panama: Artist, 1950s60s. Original work. 18.5 x 13.75 inches (image area). Reverse appliqué, in wood and cloth frame.
The painted wood frame bears some scuffs and scrapes (as seen in image); the mola itself is in very good condition, slightly faded with age but still vivid.
A wonderfully detailed mola from the Cuna people of the San Blas Islands off the coast of Panama, with traced letters, figures carrying what might be fish (or rattles, or lanterns), and a bright, intricate geometric background. The legend, SINGER SEWING MACHINES, with its reversed and upside-down letters, is a perhaps unintentionally ironic commentary on this hand-sewn practice.
