Untitled (1997) is from Araki's exceptional Kinbaku series, illustrating the highly skilled art of erotic restraint, which first came to notice in Japan in the late Edo period and flourished into a recognised art form in the early twentieth century. Precisely executed, the intricate knots and specific rope patterns on the model's body are beautifully enhanced by the monochromatic elegance of Araki's composition.

The monograph provides the most comprehensive overview yet of Araki's prolific 40-year career. Araki's key series of works are included alongside many rare and previously unpublished photographs. Featuring an interview and essays by writers from Japan and Europe, this book examines Araki from a broad range of perspectives and gives a cultural context to his work. Also included are a large selection of Araki's writings, translated into English for the first time, as well as complete illustrated and annotated bibliography of his own books. Reflecting Araki's principle of 'I-photography', the book is divided into three sections that follow the main recurring themes in his work: Self, Life and Death.

Nobuyoshi Araki, born in Tokyo in 1940, is one of Japan's most well-known and controversial photographers. Araki studied photography and filmmaking at Chiba University, where he developed an interest in Italian Neo-Realist and French Nouvelle Vague films, in particular the works of the directors Cari Theodor Dreyer and Robert Bresson.
