About This Item

[World War II] Grand Duchess Charlotte. Proclamation. Printed broadside. Approx. 51 x 53 cm. [London?]: [No publication information] 1944. Black printing on white paper. Old fold lines and small marginal tears, otherwise very good. Text repeated in French and German.

Rare. OCLC lists no holdings. No copies at Library of Congress, the Eisenhower Presidential Library or the National Archives online listings. A very emotional appeal to the citizens of Luxembourg from the Grand Duchess: "By saluting in this historic hour, in our walls, the liberating armies of our Allies, we express our deepest gratitude to them. We are proud of ours who fought in their ranks. Honor to them and to the Luxembourgers, who on the soil of the country have loyally and courageously resisted the most cruel of oppressors. We salute with emotion the memory of our compatriots who died for their country or victims of German crimes." The date 9/44 is in the lower left corner. This coincides with the date for the Allies liberation of Luxembourg by September 1944. The minister of the Government in Exile are listed on the broadside, Pierrre Dupng, who was the Minister of State; Joseph Bech, Minister of Foreign Affairs; Piere Krier, Minister of Labor & Victor Bodson who was Minister of Justice. Great display piece.
