About This Item
London: Printed at the Caxton Press, by Henry Fisher, 1832. 2 vols., 4to, pp. [iv], 790; 885, [1], 56 + frontispiece in each vol., extra engraved title-page in vol. 1, and 104 engraved plates (of a maximum of 106), one of them hand-coloured. Contemporary half calf, marbled boards, spines divided by gilt rolls, other compartments decorated with central floral tools in gilt, edges sprinkled red. Some foxing and spotting, vol. 1 dampmarked at foot towards rear. Bindings slightly worn and marked, vol. 1 rear joint just cracking at foot (this sometime tidily filled with glue). A later issue of the second edition of Thomas Green’s Universal Herbal, initially published in 1816, the second following from 1824. The plates have their own imprints and dates across a range of years: in this copy they stretch from 1816 through 1832, with the majority of the plates dating to 1823 and 1828. Copies also vary in their complement of plates, with this example bound without three of the plates called for in the plate list, but with a duplicate of an early plate from volume one bound at the very end of volume two - this duplicate present in hand-coloured form while the rest of the plates are uncoloured.
