About This Item
1769 MARINE Dictionary 1ed Falconer Military Ships Navigation Engravings NAVY
"With living colours give my verse to glow:
The sad memorial of a tale of woe!"
– William Falconer, The Shipwreck
William Falconer was an 18th-century Scottish poet whose poetry focused on marine life and life at sea. His most important work, 'The Shipwreck', was written in 1762 and gained him instant and immense success. The story follows the adventure on an English ship headed home, but was wrecked in Greece.
However, in addition to 'The Shipwreck', Falconer wrote many other works revolving around marine and sea life including his "Universal Dictionary of the Marine". This encyclopedia-like work is an alphabetically-organized work offering descriptions and examples of countless nautical terms. Perhaps the most noteworthy aspect of this work is the impressive, folding engravings – illustrations that depict ships, ship construction, fleet maneuvers, and so much more! Truly impressive work!
