About This Item

London: Thomas Martyn, 1785. First edition. Martyn, Thomas. Folio, two volumes, 32.5 cm. x 27.5 cm. Engraved title leaf in each volume; that in Vol I within a gilt Greek key border; Vol II title trimmed within the plate-mark. Each volume has 40 exquisitely hand-colored plates. Contemporary dark green goatskin, pink endpapers, all edges gilt; large damp marks on the front cover of Vol. I and the back cover of Vol. II.modern ex-libris. Only some seventy copies are thought to have been completed, and the eighty plates in the first two volumes were re-drawn (and another 80 plates added), for what might be considered the second issue. On the engraved title Martyn's address is given as No. 16 Great Marlborough Street (instead of 26 King Street); modern bookplate. While the binding has suffered loss of color in two large patches, the, text and plates are in excellent condition, with only a little offsetting or spotting. The beautifully executed plates include shells collected on all three of Cook's voyages, including shells from New Holland, New Zealand,Tahiti, Tonga, and the Hawaiian Islands.Forbes 80.
