About This Item

Aldershot: Printed by Gale & Polden, (1933). First edition, for "Private Circulation Only." A brief history of the United Services Proprietary College at Westward Ho!, Kipling's preparatory school with a preface by his old roommate, Major-General Lionel "Stalky" Dunsterville. Includes Kipling's poem "The Song of the Exiles," which first appeared in the United Services College Chronicle in 1883 and was later collected in EARLY VERSE (1900). Also includes Kipling's July 25 1894 speech on the retirement of Headmaster Cornell Price, which was first collected in KIPLING'S COLLEGE (1929). Illustrated with photographs, including a few of Kipling. Blue cloth-covered flexible boards stamped in gilt on front only with school emblem ("Fear God Honour the King") and "To Commemorate a Great School." Intended as a memory book for past students of the school which was established to serve "the need for a school where the sons of officers of the two Services could be given a good education at a moderate fee" (p.2). There can't have been may copies printed and, judging by its scarcity, it would seem only a few survived. Fine. [Richards E1-146].
