John R. R. Tolkien, CBE FRSL (1892 - 1973) was an English writer, poet, philologist, and university professor who is best known as the author of the classic high fantasy works The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion. UNFINISHED TALES collects many unknown and important stories about Middle-Earth. He served as Professor of Anglo-Saxon at Pembroke College, Oxford, (1925-1945), and Merton Professor of English at Merton College, Oxford, (1945-1959). He was at one time a close friend of C. S.
