About This Item
London: R. Cobden-Sanderson Ltd,, 1929. First edition, sixth impression (five months after the first), inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "In this copy belonging to my sister Frances I have the happiness of writing my name, with love and admiration, Eddie, July 1967". Undertones of War is Blunden's account of his service on the Western Front between 1916 and 1918, published together with a selection of his war poetry. Written without any documentation other than maps, "the book is first of all an almost perfect picture of the small events which made up the siege warfare of France and Flanders. Behind that one catches every now and then the shadow of the wings of the Furies" (Falls). Octavo. Original black cloth, spine lettered in gilt, fore and bottom edges untrimmed. Spine faded, spine ends worn, short split to head of front joint, a few marks to covers, edges and endpapers foxed, offsetting to pp. 6-7. A good copy. Falls, p. 182.
