Action, adventure and exotic locals fill the pages of this Rex Stout tale, Under the Andes. When Harry, who is as likely to lose big at the gambling table as he is to fall in love, meets Desiree - he naturally follows her. After all, she is the most beautiful woman on the continent.......
Harry's older brother Paul tries to keep Harry in line but alas, also falls for Desiree. when he discovers Harry and Desiree gone he begins his chase after them. The chase leads them to the Andes and a cavern deep beneath the mountains where the three are held prisoner by the remnants of a once mighty Inca nation.
Synopsis
The scene was not exactly new to me. Moved by the spirit of adventure, or by an access of ennui which overtakes me at times, I had several times visited the gaudy establishment of Mercer, on the fashionable side of Fifth Avenue in the Fifties. In either case I had found disappointment; where the stake is a matter of indifference there can be no excitement; and besides, I had been always in luck.
Reviews
Rex Stout's first book - and pretty bad in every respect. Ordinarily, I would've put it down, but plunged through the whole book out of reverence for Stout's later works - namely, the Nero Wolfe series.
