Spine a bit faded, paper of front endsheet just beginning to split along hinge but binding is strong and square. 1897 Hard Cover. ix, 308, [2] pp. Frontispiece and 11 plates in text by Sauber (almost definitely British painter and lithographer Robert Sauber). A historical novel by the author of the Sherlock Holmes detective stories. This is the ninth story in the Gerard Saga following brigadier Etienne Gerard, a French hussard of the Napoleon army, and the only novel in the series (the others were all short stories). The novel and other stories all originally appeared in Strand magazine between 1894 and 1910.
