About This Item

(Cape Town: Maskew Miller, [1929]). 8vo; original red cloth, lettered in black on spine and upper cover; dustwrapper; pp. vii + (iii) + 232; plates. Dustwrapper very tanned, mottled and edgeworn; extremities rubbed and bumped; spine ends and portion of upper board's top edge sunned; hand-stamp to front free endpaper; binding slack and hinges just starting. Fair condition. Loosely inserted mounted original photograph of the unveiling of the Lukin Memorial in King William's Town by Colonel E. F. Thackeray in 1932. Lukin, a Londoner, found work as a road foreman in colonial Natal in 1879. He saw action during the Anglo-Zulu War, being wounded at the final Battle of Ulundi. Thereafter, his military career was closely connected with the Cape Mounted Rifles, with whom he served in the Langeberg Campaign of 1897. Lukin served with great distinction during the Anglo-Boer War of 1899-1902, and later became Inspector-General of the Union Defence Force. He was actively involved in the campaign against the Germans in South-West Africa, and later against forces allied to the Turks in Egypt. However, his most enduring exploit was in the famous defence of Delville Wood during the British offensive on the Somme. .
